Retro-documentation of the DOKA Formwork Design Software (DFDS)
Objective
The Doka Formwork Design Software (DFDS) offers platform-independent support for beginners and professionals in formwork planning. Due to decades of development with different partners, the client lacked a detailed understanding of the core functionality, especially with regard to modernization or replacement. The goal of this project was to produce comprehensive, clearly structured and detailed documentation of DFDS's central formwork logic and its core components, enabling both a quick overview and a deeper dive.
Approach
Starting from central use cases, the underlying core functionalities were identified and documented in an iterative approach. Different documentation styles were used depending on the program part and its complexity. The largest part of the documentation consists of
- manual step-by-step documentation
- code snippets
- flow diagrams
- pseudocode
Result
The DFDS retro-documentation produced technical, functional and strategic insights. The delivered documents enable:
- Faster onboarding of new employees
- Functional description of the formwork logic
- Technical description of the architecture
- Accurate modernization of the DFDS core
